Poacher held with Hog Deer meet

Amidst constant efforts to promote and protect Sangai and other wild animals, a poacher was held for killing a Hog Deer in Keibul Lamjao National Park (Khordak side), � the last bastion of endangered Sangai, yesterday along with the meat of the Hog Deer, an animal enlisted under the Schedule I of Wildlife (Protection) Act.
The arrested poacher has been identified as Heisnam Kengba Singh (63) s/o (L) H Menjor Singh
of Khordak Mayai Leikai.
He was caught preparing the meat of the Hog Deer for sale.
Meanwhile, a DIPR press release said, Forests and Environment Minister Thounaojam Shyamkumar today assured strong action under Wildlife Protection Act 1972 against the person who was caught red handed carrying Kharsha (Hog Deer) meat yesterday.
He further said all those persons involved in the heinous act will not be spared.
OC of Keibul Lamjao PS, Wairokpam Ibocha said the poacher along with the meat was arrested by a combined team of the police and Forest officials from Khordak yesterday around 7.30 pm based on a specific input.
This is the second incident where a poacher was arrested after the opening of the Keibul Lamjao PS, the OC said while adding that opening of a police outpost at Khordak side may totally curb poaching inside the National Park.
Forest Range Officer L Biramangol Singh said that there is need to improve the infrastructure to the forest guards deployed at Keibul Lamjao National Park.
The arrested poacher was remanded to 7 days Forest custody after he was produced before the Court of CJM, Bishnupur.
Meanwhile, locals of Keibul today stormed Keibul Lamjao PS demanding handing over of the poacher to them.
They also demanded fitting punishment to the poacher.
At the same time, People for Animal (PFA) and Unique Wildlife Protection Committee, Manipur while strongly condemning the poaching inside Keibul Lamjao National Park, demanded severe punishment to the poacher.
