Imphal, May 24 2018:
Manipur Infrastructure Development Agency (MIDA) Chairman Oinam Lukhoi and engineers of Water Resources Department (WRD) today inspected the ongoing re-sectioning works of Imphal River within Wangoi AC.
The team made spot assessment of the dilapidated sections of the Imphal River banks between Samurou and Mutum Phibou.
Speaking to media persons in the course of the inspection trip, O Lukhoi who represents Wangoi AC in the Manipur Legislative Assembly noted that river re-sectioning and dredging works have been already initiated at different places at the behest of Chief Minister N Biren with the primary objective of mitigating the scourge of floods.
As a part of the same initiative, repairing works of Imphal River banks started around 20 days back within Wangoi AC.
Several structures built on the river banks such as houses, shops, market sheds etc were dismantled in advance.
Samurou and Mutum Phibou are around 14- Kms apart and the re-sectioning work has been taking considerable time as the embankments are quite high, Lukhoi said.
Nonetheless, the same works can be completed within two months if there is no heavy rainfall, he asserted.
WRD Chief Engineer Ksh Pritam said that the re-sectioning work of Imphal River would be carried out from Koirengei to Ithai Barrage.
Channelisation work is currently going on at Serou, the confluence of Manipur River and Chakpi River so as to remove obstacles to the water current, Pritam said.
He exuded confidence that the effects of floods, if there are any this year, would not be as devastating as those of the previous year.
Dredging work has also begun at Upokpi, the confluence of Nambul River and Waishel Maril.
A similar project would also be launched along Nambul River from Upokpi to Yangoi Karong, added the Chief Engineer.
