Imphal, January 24 2021:
Education Minister S Rajen Singh said, 'no society will exist without women'.
S Rajen said this while speaking as chief guest at the occasion of the observance of National Girl Child Day, 2021, organised by the Social Welfare Department, at the auditorium of Tribal Research Centre, Chingmeirong, Imphal, today.
He said that the tradition of gender discrimination existing in the country is quite unfortunate.
Understanding the prolonged system of discrimination against the girl child, the present Government has introduced many welfare schemes and protective Acts for the welfare of girl child and women.
Many frontline NGOs and civil organizations are also playing a vital role in promoting the status and rights of girl child and women.
The Nationwide observance of National Girl Child Day itself is a message to the public to understand the importance of promotion and protection of girl child and women in society, he added.
The Minister said "we should stop discrimination against girl child.
Sex determination during pregnancy has also been made illegal.
Social Welfare, Education and Health Departments need to work hand in hand in order to uplift the status of women in the society".
Rajen also maintained that girls are in no way inferior to boys.
There are a good number of examples that proves girls excel boys in many fronts.
The concept of underestimating girls should be dropped.
"We all should take care of them.
Caring steps have also been taken up by the Government for children right from pregnancy period with the main idea that they are future pillars of our society," added the Minister.
Speaking at the programme, Social Welfare Minister Okram Henry Singh said that even if there is a guaranteed gender equality between men and women, the concept of underestimating girl child seems to be still present.
It's time to work together to remove the very concept of gender preference.
He also appealed to all the organizations concerned working for the welfare of girl child and women to cooperate with the initiatives of the Government.
Laishram Tombisana, Asst Professor, Kumbi College delivered a talk on 'Girl Child Nutrition' and Dr LC Shakti Yambem, JNIMS, talked on 'Menstrual Hygiene' at the programme.
Gifts were also distributed to the representatives of NGOs and civil organizations as a part of the observance of National Girl Child Day.
