DC inaugurates National Girl Child Day at Senapati

ICDS Cell, Senapati today observed the National Girl Child Day-2020 with competitive events at DRDAHall, Senapati underthe theme "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao".
The day was graced by Somorjit Salam, DC, Senapati as chief guest and Dr Loli Mao, CMO, Senapati as guest of honour.
While delivering a welcome note, Miranda Zimik, DPO, ICDS Cell, Senapati stated that the decline of CSR of girl child is unabated since 1961.Alarmed by the sub-decline, the Govt of India introduced "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" programme to address the issue, she said, adding that the scheme was launched on January 22, 2015, by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
Speaking as the chief guest, Somorjit Salam stated that discrimination against girl child has been present since earlier days.
The preference for a male child is widespread across all the country, he said and maintained that the sex ratio is low even in Senapati district.
When girl child are not provided proper education, the society is losing half of its resources and it will hinder the development/growth of the society, Somorijit asserted, urging all to spread the message of equality to ensure that the upcoming generations are not subjected to such gender-based discrimination.
As part of the observance, an extempore speech competition was held and in that competition, P Karaila Gracy (Don Bosco Higher Secondary School Maram); LP Tracy (St Xavier College.
Maram Khunou) and Michael Maningdouba (Sainik Scool, Imphal) bagged the 1st, 2nd and 3rd position respectively.
Students from different institutions including the JNV, Mao; DBC, Maram; Modern College, Imphal; Don Bosco Hr Sec, Maram; Beltola College, Guwahati; Mt Everest College; Asufii Christian Institute, Mao; Mt Everest Hr Sec School; Sainik School, Imphal; St Xavier College, Senapati; Mt Zion College; Bethany Hr Sec School; Lao Radiant Hr Sec School; Mt Pisgah Hr Sec School and Lungnila School of Social Work took part in the competition.
On the other hand, the National Service Scheme of Don Bosco College Maram in collaboration with the women's cell of the college celebrated National Girl Child Day with much enthusiasm and vigour.
The Principal of the college, Dr Fr KO Sebastian highlighted the needs to promote awareness on a range of topics including rights of a girl child, importance of education, health, and nutrition while Leiyangam Shangrei.
the coordinator of women's cell, urged all concerned to provide maximum support and facilities to the girls of the country in every respect.
