A regional consultation programme on the problems and prospects of UN Millenium Development Goals was kick-started today at Court Room, VC Secretariat, Manipur University.
Representatives from North Eastern StatesArunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura, have took part in the discussion.
During the two-day programme, the delegates from NE states would discuss issues relating to achievement of the eight development agendas under MDGs and the deterrent factors in achieving the goals in the region.
The programme is being jointly organised by Human Rights Alert, Manipur University, UYC, Wada Na Tado Abhiyan and WinG.
The inaugural function of the programme was graced today by Vice Chancellor of Manipur Unviersity, Prof HNK Sarma; Rita Singha of Wada Na Tado Abhiyan, New Delhi as the chief guest and president respectively.
Director of HRA, Babloo Loitongbam said that since achieving the MDGs within 2015 in strife-torn States like NE India is not possible due to several factors, it is pertinent to highlight the matter to the UN for facilitating alternative strategy.
It may be recalled that the UN launched the Millenium Development Goals among its member countries in 2000 with the target to complete the mission by 2015.Among others, the eight goals included in MDGs are alleviating poverty, ensuring primary education to all children, to alleviate gender divides, ensuring rights to every child, providing nutrition to mothers, to collectively fight against epidemic like AIDS, malaria, etc, to improve rural areas and to help member countries in solving their problems.
