Differently abled man allegedly beaten up

A 60-year-old differently abled man has been allegedly beaten up by his younger brother and his wife on the charge of putting poison in their pond.
In a press conference held at Manipur Press Club, victim Thokchom Ranjit s/o (L) Bira of Phaobakchao Awang Leikai, said that he went to his younger brother Joymani's house to discuss the matter of a Phiroi ceremony on July 8 .
However, Ranjit returned home as he found nobody in his brother's house.
After some time, his younger brother and his wife came to his house and allegedly beat him black and blue on the charge of putting poison in their pond.
Injured Ranjit was rushed to RIMS Hospital by his wife.
The same day, even as he was getting treatment in the hospital, police summoned him to appear before them as his younger brother had filed a complaint at Mayang Imphal Police Station in connection with the incident, Ranjit said.
He added that he went to the police station along with his wife and son.
However, no understanding could be brought even after a long conversation with O/C of the police station and other family members.
The next day at around 2.30 pm, Mayang Imphal Police Station O/C forcefully took Ranjit's signature of his confession to the allegation levelled against him by his younger brother Joymani, Ranjit alleged.
The O/C also asked him to pay Rs 35,000 for damaging the pond of his younger brother, Ranjit said.
His younger brother also allegedly threatened Ranjit to face dire consequences including death if he did not comply with the order of the O/C.On the otherhand, the O/C also threatened him to send him to jail for life if the amount is not paid to his younger brother, Ranjit alleged.
On July 12, Ranjit requested the O/C to file an FIR against his brother Joymani and his wife for assaulting him.
However, the police officer turned down his request, Ranjit said.
Taking part at the press conference, State Platform of Disable Organization, Manipur (SPDO) president Jashobanta said that the victim reported the matter to them some days back.
He added that they made a complaint to the Director General of Police on July 17 against Th Joymani, his wife Basanti and other family members - Th (O) Memma w/o Th Bramo and her daughter Th Ichanchaobi, Th Bala w/o Chitaranjan, Th Nanao and his wife Devala, Th (O) Laphoi w/o Babudhon and his son Th Sunil and O/C of Mayang Imphal Police Station.
Jashobanta also said that they have also filed a petition to the Court with the help of para legal volunteers of Legal Aid Clinic, Cheirap Court complex.
Jashobanta said that they are disappointed with the fact that some people were intentionally victimizing a differently abled person.
He also urged the public not to indulge in such activities.
