Senapati, January 16 2020:
Mao Students' Union has condemned the 'excessive and unlawful violence' perpetrated by one ASI to a truck driver on January 14 at Kangpokpi Bazaar.
The union reiterated that the fundamental duty of the police is to protect the life and well being of citizens and not threatening them.
Trucks ferrying essential commodities are the lifeline of the State and the drivers spent countless of hours on the road to transport goods for the welfare of the State and yet the Manipur Police harassed them repeatedly, added the union.
Appealing the State Government to immediately terminate the Police personnel involved in the incident, the union extended its supports to the Truckers Union and Association in their demand for Justice.
Thangal Anleinao Jonlong (Thangal Naga Students Union) has also condemned the incident.
Saying that such behaviour of the officer is unprofessional and uncalled for, the association demanded stern action against the erring police officer.
The student body also urged the authority concerned to ensure that such 'reprehensible' acts are not repeated in future.
On the other hand, strongly condemning the barbaric behaviour, the Koide Union also demanded immediate service termination of ASI Hitler Singh.
A joint press statement of Koide Union, Koide Kapao, Koide Biisho, Koide Youth & Students Organisation and Senapati-Karong Areas Koide Union stated that Dale, s/o Sele is a young truck driver and the only breadwinner of his family.
Driving truck is his profession and although he is not well educated such inhumane assault could lead in giving up his profession for fear of further harassment if such unruly police personnel are not given befitting punishment in the interest of the general public, it said.
The union also came to learn that Dale Alexander is not the only driver from Koide Union, there are other four drivers who have been tortured by Hitler namely, H Reihii, s/o Henii, H Birbal, S/o Henii, K Nanii, s/o Kavei and L Luckyson, S/o Lunii, it claimed.
It has also been reported that Police are collecting money from truck drivers right in front of the office of Kangpokpi Police Superintendent near Kangpokpi bridge, it claimed.
The drivers are often chased and beaten up while trying to escape the police on duty because they are not willing to pay them big amount, the Union added.
Extending gratitude to Senapati District Students' Association, Senapati District Drivers Welfare Union, Senapati District Truck Owners Association and Senapati District Truck Drivers Union for spearheading the protest on behalf of the victim and all drivers in Manipur, the union said that support shall be given to economic blockade volunteers until their demand is met and if the need arises, Koide Union will send youth to carry out agitation.
