Imphal, February 15 2020:
Manipur International University (MIU) has invited Men-Tsee-Khang (Tibetan Medical and Astro Institute) to establish an international medical college and hospital of Tibetan medi-cines in Manipur and in this regard, an MoU was signed on February 12 at Dharam-shala, Himachal Pradesh between MIU and Men-Tsee-Khang (Sowa-Rigpa), an institute specializing in Sowa-Rigpa (Tibetan medi-cine) which is already recog- nized by the Department of AYUSH, India.
Appreciating and lauding the endeavours of Manipur International University and MoU, the XIV Dalai Lama conveyed that he is pleased to learn about the university's proposal to have a center for Tibetan medicine and astrology.
This alternative medicine system will certainly enable students and the community alike to appreciate the importance of a holistic approach to treatment, he said.
Tashi Tsering Phuri, Director of Men-Tsee-Khang (Sowa-Rigpa) said that in nearly sixty years of the institute's existence in India, it has collaborated with many groups in India and abroad but the past offers have never been like that of the MIU.
As such, the signing of the MoU is historic, he claimed.
"Sowa-Rigpa is one of the oldest medicinal practice of Tibetan passed down from 3000 years ago.
This system is priceless and endangered now.
There is an urgent need to protect, preserve and propagate Sowa- Rigpa," said Dr Harikumar Pallathadka, Chancellor of MIU.
With the signing of the MoU, Manipur International University will start degree courses in Sowa-Rigpa and associated subjects in Manipur, he added.
It may be mentioned that the Dalai Lama visited Imphal in October of 2017 on the invitation of the State Government.
