Manipur Postal Div observes Mail Day

Mail Day was observed today as part of the ongoing National Postal Week celebrations in Manipur Postal division.
Vinod Kumar, Director Manipur said in a statement that more than 6088.25 million articles were being handled during the year 2013-14 with an increase of 0.54 percent in traffic as compared to the previous financial year.
Kumar informed that the expansion of Postal Network in the country, especially in rural areas, has taken place mainly through opening of Gramin Dak Sevak Post Offices and in order to provide mail facilities to the rural public, subsidy is also provided to Branch Post Offices in rural, hilly, tribal, isolated and inaccessible areas.
Generally people are not aware of how a letter or postcard dropped in letter box at Imphal HO can reach far and remote places while there is an amazing system in place which makes possible long journey for a postcard at 25 paise only.
Mail day witnessed visits of school children from Savio English School, Thangmeiband, Imphal.
Sonia, a social science teacher accompanied them.
Kumar informed that visits of school children are being organised in all sub divisions of Manipur.
Further he stated that in order to improve the quality of mail processing, transmission and delivery, India Post had initiated Mail Network Optimization Project for improvement in the operational processes, transmission and delivery under a hub-and-spoke network model.
Further he said, through an online track and trace system for viewing the end-to-end status of Speed Post articles on website www.indiapost.gov.in which has resulted improvement in the transit time of mail.
For speedy delivery of mails, it is essential that time taken during sorting be reduced, for this DoP has established Automatic Mail Processing Centres (AMPCs) in Delhi and Kolkata.
Automated centres are equipped with a sorting speed of 35000 and 18000 items per hour.
Kumar said all people should be aware about correct method of writing address hence we are making the children conscious about right way to put address and standard stationery by organising workshops for them in Imphal.
