Protection and Preservation Committee Manipur (PPCM) continued its relief work to assist vulnerable and worst affected people of both hills and valley with distribution of edible items amidst COVID-19 Nationwide lockdown.
A team of the committee today visited and extended edible items to the Tarao community at Heikakpokpi (Pallel) and Chothe community at Khongkhang.
The items were distributed to mark solidarity in face of the lockdown and to reminisce the historical significance of Tarao and Chothe communities.
PPCM lauded the spirit of Chothe community who are consciously preserving their own culture and tradition for so long despite many challenges and urged the State Government to give special attention towards the community for welfare.
PPCM while highlighting the plights of the Khongkhang village, said that only who possess NFSA card are getting relief rice provided by the Government while non card holders, who are also supposed to get the same are left out, leaving them hapless with limited resources.
The village has only 365 residents "Soibum (fermented bamboo shoot)" and "Heiribob" production are their main occupations.
Although the village lies along a National Highway, the village is yet to see the light of proper educational and medical facilities, said PPCM in its statement while drawing attention of the State Government to look in the matter and extend all necessary assistance entitled and listed for recognised tribal in the Constitution.
The communities also presented vegetables grown at their respective villages to the visiting team as a mark of respect and gratefulness, the statement said.
The items they presented to the team have been handed over to the functionaries of Youth Social Cultural Union for distribution to the locals, said PPCM.
