Imphal, November 10 2014:
Demanding immediate stop to quarrying and mining activities along Thoubal river which pose danger to aquatic eco system of the river, PFA has warned of taking up action against the authority concerned, including filing a PIL, if necessary, unless the mining activity is restrained before Nov 15 .
A PFA statement pointed out that mining at river without permission from MoEF or SEIAA is illegal.
It is also against National Green Tribunal Act, 2010, Environment Protection Act, 1986, Water (Prevention and control of pollution) Act, 1974.Indian Forest Act and Wildlife Protection Act could also be invoked if the mining is near any forest area or protected area.
Order of the year 2013 of National Green tribunal directed all the Deputy Commissioners, Superintendents of Police and mining authority of every State to restrain any person, company, authority to carry out any mining activity or removal of sand from river beds anywhere in the country without obtaining environmental clearance from MoEF/ SIAA, it said.
Thoubal river has been sustaining numerous lives since time immemorial.
Now thousands of people and animal are in danger as they cannot consume the turbid river water, it said.
