Imphal, June 09 2020:
"Everyone should contribute in running the quarantine centres and people should stop seeing returnees as the virus itself," stated Heisnam Okendro, convenor of community quarantine centres located in Heingang Assembly Constituency.
He was speaking to reporters at a press meet held today at Luwangsangbam Panthoibi Sanglen.
He said three community quarantine centres have been set up in Heingang AC namely at Liberal College Girls Hostel, Manipur Public School and Sangai Higher Secondary School.
The inmates are mostly students, employees and people who went for treatment.
"So far the centres have received 369 inmates out of which 229 tested negative and were sent home.
Two inmates turned out to be outsiders and were shifted at a hotel quarantine centre.
The remaining 138 inmates are presently staying at the quarantine centres," he informed.
"People should stop seeing returnees as the virus itself We should remember that many COVID-19 patients have recovered completely after treatment and no deaths have been reported so far in the State," he added.
"Some guardians have never even come to see the conditions of their wards thinking the volunteers will do everything needed," he said disappointedly and appealed to the people to stop the habit of leaving everything to the Government or the volunteers or the health workers.
Many people are still unaware about how these quarantine centres are being run, he added.
He also informed about 20 truck drivers who are staying at the quarantine centre at Manipur Public School and added that some of the drivers were kicked out by their localities and some have decided to stop their service because of the discrimination they had to face.
"Transport Department after utilizing the drivers sent them off by only conducting a screening.
"We appeal to the Transport Department to properly guide the drivers to these quarantine centres as they cannot return home only after the screening process," he added.
The volunteers even had to provide ambulance service for inmates who have no one to drive them home after the completion of their quarantine period, he added.
Medical Officer in-charge of Heingang AC quarantine centres, Lairenlakpam Suranjoy appealed to the authorities concerned to make arrangements to conduct the testing faster saying they have to face a lot of problems when the quarantine centres are overloaded.
