92,994 illiterate women in four districts: Report

According to a Survey report of the Shakshar Bharat Mission, there were 92,994 illiterate women of 15 years and above in Chandel, Senapati, Tamenglong and Thoubal districts of the state as on May 2010.The finding of the report was presented by Additional Director, Adult Education S Saratkumar as part of the International Literacy Day observation function organized by Directorate of Adult Education, State Literacy Mission Authority held at Rupamahal Theatre today.
Leishangthem ongbi Bilashini from Thoubal Leishangthem Wangma Taba was conferred the award of Best Volunteer Teachers' Award which carries a cash prize of Rs 10,000 and a shawl, recognizing her contribution in promoting the Shakshar Bharat Mission.
State Literacy Ambassador Kh Bishwamitra was also honoured with a cash award of Rs 20,000 along with a shawl.
Joint Director, Adult Education Matilda Matiya and Joint Director TD & JSN H Ngalok were also honoured by presenting shawls as part of the function.
MLA K Meghachandra and retired Director University and Higher Education K Nabachandra graced the function as Chief Guest and President respectively.
Additional Director, Adult Education S Saratkumar also attended as Guest of Honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Saratkumar said that the Shakshar Bharat Mission was initiated by the Prime Minister of India in 2009 with an objective to literate more than 70 million illiterate adult including 60 million illiterate women in the country.
The mission is targeting to reduce the gender gap of illiteracy to 10 percent and increase literacy rate to 80 percent by 2012 .
Chandel, Senapati, Tamenglong and Thoubal districts in Manipur were included in the 375 districts of the country which has female literacy rate below 50 percent.
The mission was implemented in the four districts in January, 2010.According to a survey report of the mission, there were 92,994 illiterate women of 15 years and above.
Out of these, Thoubal district has 34,299 illiterate female while figures of the remaining three districts were 14,648 for Chandel, 32,468 for Senapati and 11,579 for Tamenglong districts.
All the four districts have now their own Zilla Lok Shikshya Samiti.
Moreover 257 adult education centres have been set up in the four districts to implement the mission successfully.
Basic Literacy Class for Thoubal district commenced from May 9 this year while classes for the remaining three districts began from September 2 this year.
Meanwhile, the Department of Adult Continuing Education and Extension, Manipur University also observed the International Literacy Day at Thongju Maibi Lampak Community Hall.
Speaking on the occasion, Professor Ksh Bimola said that only after the female literacy rate increases, will the society become a developed society.
Dean of School of Social Sciences, Manipur University, Professor Amar Yumnam and HOD, Department of Adult Continuing Education and Extention P Jamini graced the function as Chief Guest and President respectively.
Upa-Pradhan, Thongju Gram Panchayat Ch Sumati attended as Guest of Honour.
Professor Ksh Bimola, Professor Chinglen Maisnam and Dr Dhanabir Laishram also attended the function as resource persons.
