Imphal, November 05 2024:
Even as three State institutes - Manipur University of Culture, Manipur Technical University and Dhanamanjuri University are struggling to run smoothly, the latter (DMU) needs urgent intervention of the Government, said the Manipur International Youth Centre (MIYC) .
The University which has over 15,000 students may lose UGC (University) recognition if not intervened in time.
It needs a Vice Chancellor who can run it efficiently and effectively, it said in a statement today.
The Dhanamanjuri University was established after the State Assembly took the decision in 2017 .
While the University started its first academic session from 2018, it still lacks required infrastructure and staff.
It has not yet received UGC's Section 12B status, said the MIYC.
The 12B status is a special privilege that allows Universities to receive funds from the Centre and affiliated bodies for research and academic activities.
Marred by irregularities and shortages of staff, the Dhanamanjuri University is unable to function and stick to its academic calendar.
It is unable to start sessions and hold examinations on time, clouding the career of thousands of students, said the MIYC.
The University has 5 constituent colleges DM College of Arts, DM College of Science, DM College of Commerce, GP Women's College and LMS Law College, but the administration concerning the teachers has been problematic, it said.
While many teachers including newly recruited ones are treated as University teachers, some are under the administration of the Principals of the constituent colleges, it added.
Further, the MIYC said, the University's crucial committees including the Executive Council, Board, Syndicate, Finance, Academic Council and Research Committee etc are unable to function properly.
The University lacks the required numbers of teaching and non-teaching staff, infrastructure and equipment.
Newly recruited teachers don't even have rooms, desks and tables, it added.
The Governor, Chief Minister and the Education Minister of the State must intervene immediately to save the DMU.
A deserving VC who can run the University swiftly and efficiently must be appointed urgently, and all vacancies should be filled at the earliest and not put the career of students at stake, said the MIYC.
