A sixty-six year old man along with a woman have been arrested by the police on charges of counterfeiting several Government documents or certificates and vending them in public, officials said here today.
Thangchinmang, 66 alias Davis Mang a resident of Mission Compound - the alleged kingpin in the counterfeit business - was arrested by the police on October 31-three days after a woman who vended several of the forged certificates he made from her shop was caught by the police on receiving a tip-off, according to Mannuamching, the in-charge Deputy Commissioner of Churachandpur.
The woman claimed before the police that she was not aware that the documents were forged and identified the man who gave her the official documents including Income, Tribe, Domicile and Land Ownership certificates, leading the police to the kingpin she said.
Ten counterfeit seals of the Deputy Commissioner, the ADC and SDO; over 70 blank certificates, birth certificates and ration cards were confiscated from the man's possession.
The in-charge DC also claimed that Davis Mang had been arrested by the police earlier on similar charges, and warned the public not to be swayed by people who claim they can arrange crucial Government documents.
While Davis has been remanded to police custody, the woman who sold the certificates on his behalf was already out on bail.
Meanwhile, the police have also detained a 23 year-old woman identified as Nemngeihpar alias Pari, wife of Kapjohnson of New Lamka (G) on October 28 in the murder case of Thangliansiam sometime last month.
The police who initially obtained 7 days custody of the accused produced her before the CJM today seeking an additional 7 days custody, which was granted.
