Imphal, March 04 2016 : A one day awareness session on vector borne diseases control programme was held at Meijrao Model School, Irom Meijrao under the auspices of District Malaria Officer, Imphal West.

A number of students, ASHA workers and locals of the area took part in the programme.

Vector borne diseases are illnesses caused by pathogens and parasites in human.

Dengue, malaria and Japanese encephalitis, kala-azar, filaria and chikungunya are some vector borne diseases.

The programme assumed significance with the onset of monsoon season when vector borne diseases are said to be prevalent.

A team led by District Malaria Officer, Imphal West Dr N Thoinao conducted the awareness session.

He said that the main objective of organizing such session is to make the locals aware about vector borne diseases and its preventive measures.

He narrated that last year a 10-year old student Ch Machongbambou from Chaton Part II of Tamenglong district was diagnosed with Japanese encephalitis.

Early detection and prompt care saved the life of Machongbambou, he stated.

Further plans to tackle the menace of vector borne diseases will be taken up in different areas of Imphal West district.

Medicated mosquito nets will be distributed in the coming days.

He further urged the locals and ASHAs to extend their help and support to DMO of Imphal West in combating vector borne diseases and added that prevention is the best medication to tackle diseases like dengue, malaria and Japanese encephalitis.

Secretary of Meijrao Model School, Hemanta expressed gratitude to the DMO and his team for conducting such awareness programme.
