FCI now has new godown at Tangjeng in Thoubal

The Food Storage Depot (Godown) of Food Corporation of India at Tangjeng, Thoubal district was inaugurated by Ashutosh Kumar Sinha, IPS, Executive Director (Zone), FCI, Zonal Office (North-East), Guwahati today.
Manoj Kumar Gogoi, Chief General Manager, FCI, North-East Zone, Guwahati, Armstrong Pame, Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Manipur, G Kamei, Deputy General Manager (Region), FCI, Manipur region and other officers and staff of FCI, among others, were present in the inaugural function.
The construction works of the 2,500 metric tonne storage capacity depot under 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17) was awarded to Manipur Development Society in 2012 but the project was left incomplete by the MDS in 2014.The balance works were awarded to Technical Promotion Cell (Valley-I) under Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Manipur in March 2018, said officials.
Speaking ob the occasion, Executive Director (Zone) informed the gathering that Food Corporation was set up in 1964 with the objectives of safeguarding the interests of the farmers, transportation of food grains from surplus regions to deficit regions and to maintain buffer stocks to ensure food security of the Nation.
He informed that at present, FCI is having its own food grain storage capacity of 38,090 MT in Manipur and with addition of 2,500 MT Thoubal godown the storage capacity would be enhanced to 40,590 MT.
This is excluding ongoing construction of godowns at Bishnupur (4,600 MT), Churachandpur (2,500 MT) and Tamenglong (5,000 MT) and new projects sanctioned for Chandel (1,640 MT), Pherzawl (1,670 MT) and additional capacity of 3,340 MT for Churachandpur districts.
When all these projects are completed, the total storage capacity of FCI in Manipur will be 59,370 MT.
This is excluding 4,000 MT State Government godown hired from Government of Manipur at Koirengei.
He further informed that with the opening of FCI godown at Thoubal, the food grain requirements of Thoubal, Chandel, Kakching and Tengnoupal which are being lifted from FCI godown at Sangaiprou can be lifted from the new godown at Tangjeng, Thoubal in the coming days for implementation of National Food Security Act, 2013 and other welfare schemes of Government of India.
This will save transportation cost and lifting time.
He expressed gratitude to the state government for allotment of land for construction of the depot and assistance and cooperation during execution of the project.
He also thanked the MDS and TP Cell (Valley-I) for execution of the project.
He sought the assistance and cooperation of the district administration and local residents in operating the new godown in the interest of the public.
Trees were planted in the depot premises after the inaugural ceremony.
