Imphal, September 01 2016:
Lok Sabha MP Thokchom Meinya launched a pineapple processing unit at the Iroishemba campus of College of Agriculture, Central Agriculture University on Aug 30 .
The pineapple processing unit was installed in a Tata mini truck by a private firm located at Paona Bazar after it was designed by College of Agriculture, CAU, said College of Agriculture Dean Dr JM Laishram.
The mobile processing unit can be used for peeling off and extracting juice off Yelang Kihom (a larger variety of pineapple).
The unit will operate on the principle of 'no loss, no gain', JM Laishram said.
He then appealed to all pineapple farmers not to let even one pineapple go waste and also to give up the fear about pineapples getting rotten.
CAU would tie up with Likla enterprises in order to make the new initiative successful.
The university has also been working to extract dry powder from pineapple, he continued.
Ex-MU Vice-Chancellor Prof H Tombi was also present at the function apart from CAU faculty members and farmers.
