In the morning of May 29, the landlord/owner knocked on the door and there was again no response.
When Reingamphi did not open the door, the landlord took a stool, climbed on it and peeped inside Reingamphi's room through the ventilator and the saw her lying on the bed.
Then the landlord called her friend and asked her to come and make Reingamphi respond, but still there was no response.
Her friend suggested to the house owner that Reingamphi's brothers be informed before the arrival of Police but the house owner resisted.
The house owner then called the Police.
The Police broke open the door and found Reingamphi dead.
She had multiple injuries, while her nose was bitten off and her leg bore a big cut mark, her eyelids scratched, eyes bleeding.
There were blood stains on the bed-sheet, her wearing clothes and the mattresses, reports alleged.
The relatives submitted a complaint letter to the SHO, Malviya Nagar Police Station on 29 May, 2013.On May 30 morning, two cousins with some other people from the Manipur community went to the Malviya Nagar Police station at 9 am to take an update on the case.
The SHO Vijay Pal said that their preliminary investigation had shown that it was a case of suicide and there was no evidence to suggest otherwise.
The Police did not take cognizance of the complaint given by the family of the girl.
According to the complaint, their family suspects that Reingamphi was murdered.
The complaint also mentions that the brother-in-law of the landlord had been harassing and stalking her in the past.
The SHO refused to file an FIR and told everyone to wait for the post-mortem report.
When the report came yesterday, they did not give a copy to the relatives of A.S.Reingamphi.
According to the interim post mortem report there were no blood stains on the clothes which is false as the photograph of the dead body clearly shows her lying in a pool of blood.
After 3 days of sustained pressure, the police eventually registered the case under Section 306 which is Abetment to Suicide despite the family insisting that it be registered under section 302 and section 304 which are related to murder and culpable homicide respectively.
The protestors demanded to re-conduct a post mortem by experts and to transfer the case to the Special Crime Branch.
They also demanded that the case be investigated as a case of murder and sexual assault and not suicide and the police give guarantee in writing of the process to the family.
The protestors further demanded that the Police deal with the matter with integrity and sensitivity.
