Churachandpur, March 31 2015 :
Thadou Students' Association (TSA) Churachandpur haS vehemently disapproved and rejected the resolution of the Autonomous District Council, Churachandpur to rename Churachandpur district as Lamka district.
According to a statement issued by Ngamkholen Haokip, general secretary, TSA, Churachandpur, the All Paite Students' Association (APSU) had submitted a memorandum to the then Chief Minister Rishang Keishing on October 27, 1982 to rename Churachandpur district as Lamka district.
Rishang Keishing had entrusted the matter to the then Deputy Commissioner VK Singh.
Chiefs of Hiangtam Lamka, Bijang Loubuk, Bungmual, Tuibong, Chiengkonpang, Phailen villages had also submitted an endorsement letter of the APSU's memorandum.
However, following the opposition by the then Agricultural Minister Ngurdinglien during the State Cabinet meeting, it resolved not to rename the district.
Stating that the first sub-divisional in Kuki inhabited area was founded in Suongpi village as Suongpi sub-divisional and later changed to Churachandpur sub-division, TSA said that Lamka cannot be treated on an equal footing with Suongpi which was founded in the land that belonged to Suongpi village.
Therefore, if the district has to be renamed then it should be Suongpi district.
TSA, Churachandpur had submitted a memorandum to Churachandpur DC regarding the matter on February 17, 2014 to rectify the statement "Churachandpur locally and originally known as Lamka" in their website- www.ccpurdistrict.com.
TSA urged the House to reconsider its resolution adopted for the interest of the people living in Churachandpur district.
