Duggal sworn-in as 14th State Governor

Former Union Home Secretary VK Duggal was sworn-in as the 14th Governor of Manipur today.
The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Durbar Hall of Raj Bhavan here.
Chief Justice of Manipur High Court Lakshmikanta Mahapatra administered the oath of office and secrecy of the newly appointed Governor of the State.
Chief Minister Okram Ibobi, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, Ministers, MLAs and officials of the State Government attended the ceremony.
Talking to media persons after the swearing-in ceremony, VK Duggal said that he would discharge his duties as the Governor of Manipur strictly in accordance with the Constitution of India.
Duggal said that he had worked for the northeastern states for more than nine years while he was in the administrative service.
He would strive to bring good governance and development to the State, the newly appointed Governor assured.
Duggal also wished a happy and prosperous New Year-2014 to the people of the State.
Being the first IAS officer from Union Territory cadre, 68-year old Duggal of 1968 batch was the Home Secretary from March 2005 to April 1, 2007 .
Serving as Member of National Disaster Management Authority in the rank and staus of Union Minister of State, Duggal was in charge of relief operations after the natural disaster that had struck Uttarakhand and Orissa recently.
After his retirement as Union Home Secretary in March 2007, he had served as Member of other Commissions and Committees in the rank and status of Minister of State.
He has also served in various capacities during his tenure in the Government services, which included Municipal Commissioner of Delhi from 1996 to 2000, Special Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Forests and Secretary in Water Resources Ministry.
Before Duggal, 13 individuals have occupied the highest administrative post of the State Government.
They are BK Nehru (from 21st January, 1972 to 20th September, 1973), LP Singh (from 21st September, 1973 to 11th August, 1981), SMH Burney (from 12th August, 1981 to 11th June, 1984), KV Krishna Rao (from 2nd June, 1984 to 7th July, 1998), Chintamani Panigrahi (from 10th July, 1989 to 19th March, 1993), KV Raghunatha Reddy (from 20th March, 1993 to 30th August, 1993), VK Nayar (from 31st August, 1993 to 22nd December, 1994), ON Shrivastava (from 23rd December, 1994 to 11th February, 1999), Ved Marwah (from 2nd December, 1999 to 12th June, 2003), Arvind Dave (from 13th June, 2003 to 5th August, 2004), Shivinder Singh Sidhu (from 6th August, 2004 to 22nd July, 2008), Gurbachan Jagat (from 23rd July, 2008 to 22nd July, 2013) and Dr Ashwani Kumar (from 23rd July, 2013 to December 25, 2013 .
Dr Ashwani is the Governor of Nagaland and he was looking after the post until appointment of a new Governor of Manipur.
