AR recovers Tokay Geckos

Imphal, October 30 2012:
Discovering the smuggling of banned wildlife items at No 2 Gate (Moreh) of Chandel district, troops of 9 Assam Rifles of 26 Sector launched an operation in the area and apprehended two individuals alongwith banned wild life products on October 29, said a PRO IGAR (S) release.
identifying the wildlife smugglers as Wahengbam Mani Singh (35) s/o W Yaima Singh of Lamphel Sanakeithel and Chingangbam Rajesh Singh (35) s/o Ch Kesho Singh of Lamdeng Mayai Leikai, both in Imphal West district, the release said five Tokay Geckos were recovered from the duo's possession.
The Tokay Geckos were being smuggled from Moreh to Myanmar and further to be sent to China.
The estimated cost of each Tokay Gecko is about Rs.30-40,000 in the domestic market, it said adding that both the apprehendees alongwith the recoveries have been handed over to the Wild Life Department, Moreh.
