Ways to prevent heart diseases deliberated upon

Raj Medicity, Imphal in collaboration with Lupin Pinnacle, Imphal organised a one-day awareness campaign on the theme "Heat Attack is Preventable" at the hospital auditorium today.
The function was graced by Hiyanglam AC MLA Dr Radheshyam Yumnam who is 'also the Chairman of Manipur Industrial Development Corporation & Manipur Electronics Development Corporation Limited; Hoabijam Rajen Singh, MD, Raj Medicity; Dr Ksh Kala Singh, retired Professor, CTVS, RIMS and president of Manipur Heart Care Society and Dr Th Joy Singh, Senior Physician, Raj Medicity as the chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Speaking at the function, Dr Radheshyam underscored the need to publicise the facts and ideas related to prevention of heart attack to the targeted population.
He said that ASHAs, nurses, other concerned staff and media personnel play an important role in generating the awareness that heart attack can be prevented if due caution and preventive measures are taken up in time.
He pointed out that physical activities in day-to-day life have been relatively declined as mechanization and invention of scientific equipment have largely replaced human activities.
Dr Radheshyam emphasised on the need to develop good habits and maintain healthy life styles to prevent heart attack.
Having tension and feeling anxious in life are unavoidable, however, one must find ways to dissuade sad feelings in mind.
One should believe that sharing sad and painful matters to dear ones would breathe a sigh of relief and find the root cause of developing tensions and anxiety, he said.
He urged the people to understand the risk factors of heart attack and other heart ailments and take due precautions in time to prevent the disease.
Dr Kala noted that India is amongst the countries that are vulnerable to heart attack and other deadly heart ailments.
Informing that the rate of people suffering from cardiovascular disease and other heart ailments in Manipur is high, he claimed that 15 out of every 100 people in the State have heart diseases.
The rate of people dying from cardiovascular disease in India is also high with death of 2 million people in a year, he said, adding that the global death rate due to the disease is 17.3 million people per year.
Terming consumption of tobacco products, eating of excessive saturated fats, high sugar level and less involvement in physical activities as the main causes of heart ailments and heart attack, he asked to all to abstain from using tobacco products and maintain proper dieting with exercise to prevent the disease.
