HCBA likely to call off stir

Members of the High Court Bar Association (HCBA) who have been staying away from Courts since November 8 demanding appointment of Judges to the separate High Court of Manipur from amongst lawyers of the State are likely to suspend their agitation.
Speaking to media persons Gauhati High Court complex here today, HCBA vice president Advocate Chingangbam Dhananjoy conveyed that HCBA president Advocate N Kumarjit and general secretary Advocate Roshni Piba called on Union Law Minister AK Patnaik at New Delhi yesterday and highlighted the association's demands.
The Law Minister not only observed that the demands were reasonable but also assured to fulfil them.
Further, Kumarjit and Roshni Piba would meet the Chief Justice of India before returning to Imphal on Saturday.
A meeting of the association would be held on December 3 and it would decide whether the ongoing agitation would be suspended or not, Dhananjoy said.
Advocate Khaidem Mani said that there are 22/23 High Courts in India.
There are around 1000 Judges for these High Courts.
The basic demand of the association is appointment of just five Manipuris to the post of High Court Judges, he explained.
There are around 2000 Advocates in Manipur.
Among them, around 100/200 are eligible for the post of High Court Judge, Mani asserted.
