Workshop on SSIDH Project held

A workshop on "Space Based Support for Integrated Development ofHorticulture in NER (SSIDH) Project" was held today at the Conference Hall of the Directorate of Agriculture, Government of Manipur in Sanjenthong, Imphal.
The workshop was jointly organised by North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC), Manipur Remote Sensing Application Centre (MARSAC) and Department of Horticulture & Soil Conservation, Government of Manipur under the sponsorship of Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, Government of India.
It was attended by Md Zakir Hussain Khan, Additional Director, Department of Horticulture & Soil Conservation; O Nodiachand Singh, Director, MARSAC; and A Ponika Devi, Deputy Director, Department of Horticulture & Soil Conservation among others.
The workshop began with a welcome address by Yaite Khupsorel Koireng, Joint Director, Department of Horticulture & Soil Conservation and opening remark by Md Zakir Hussain Khan.
Speaking on the occasion, O Nodiachand said that under the SSIDH Project, potential sites suitable for cultivation of horticulture crops will be identified using space technology in five districts of the State namely Chandel, Churachandpur, Tengnoupal, Pherzawl and Noney.
He continued that under the project, space technology will be used to identify suitable areas for cultivation of citrus in Chandel, pineapple in Churachandpur, banana in Noney, ginger in Pherzawl and Citrus macroptera (heiribob) in Tengnoupal.
O Nodiachand further asserted that the use of space technology to identify suitable areas for crop growth and the specific types of crop that would thrive in these areas will significantly raise the production of horticulture crops in the State.
At the event, Priyana Kharibam, Scientist 'A' (Production), MARSAC delivered a lecture on the topic, "Identification of suitable sites for expansion important horticultural crops in 5 selected districts of Manipur" while Dr Chandan Goswami, Scientist 'SF', NESAC, Shillong spoke on "SSIDH Mobile Application" .
The workshop culminated with a vote of thanks proposed by A Ponika Devi.
