Imphal, November 28 2024:
The three-day 10th All India Students' Conference organised by All India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO) since November 27 at Talkatora Stadium, New Delhi, has raised serious concern over the protracted unrest situation in Manipur.
In a resolution adopted at the conference, AIDSO alleged complicity of both central and state governments in ethnic violence and failure to address the crisis effectively.
In a statement, AIDSO observed how Manipur has been grappling with inter-community violence for over a year and a half, leading to the deaths of more than 250 people and the displacement of around 60,000 and criticised the divisive politics of the governments, accusing them of ignoring the devastating impact of the conflict on the lives and livelihoods of the people.
The resolution noted suffering of the students, with many educational institutions converted into shelter camps, disrupting normal academic activities.
Thousands of displaced students have been forced to abandon their education due to financial hardships caused by the shattered economic conditions of their families.
AIDSO expressed dismay over the government's inaction in initiating dialogues for peace despite a growing desire for harmony among all sections of the Manipuri society, including students.
The conference also condemned the recent re-imposition of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), 1958, in areas under Sekmai, Lamsang, Lamlai, Jiribam, Leimakhong, and Moirang police stations by the home ministry.
Calling AFSPA a draconian law, and demanding its immediate repeal, the resolu tion emphasised the need for a democratic solution to the ongoing crisis and urged the central and state governments to act urgently to restore peace and harmony in Manipur.
The conference also appealed to the student community across the country to unite and raise their voices, to pressure the governments take decisive steps to end the conflict and restore normalcy in the state, the statement added.
