Imphal, September 25 2012: A suspected UG cadre has been slain in a reported encounter with a combined team of Imphal West commandos and troops of 18th Sikh Regiment at Changangei Ucheckon this evening.

A police source said that the encounter took place on the road between Changangei Ucheckon and Taobungkhok under Lamphel police station in Imphal West district at about 5.40 pm.

A man who was walking on foot hurled a grenade and opened fire towards the combined team when he was signalled to stop for identification.

However, the grenade failed to explode and the security forces took position and retaliated immediately killing the attacker.

One pistol and a mobile phone handset were recovered from the slain individual.

One Chinese hand grenade without lever was also recovered from a spot, a little distance away from the place where the man was lying dead.

The grenade was set off safely by explosive experts of Manipur Police at about 7.10 pm.

Police have picked up the corpse and deposited it at RIMS mortuary.
