Imphal, April 24 2019:
The JAC formed against the death of Chandam Bibi, who was just 9 months old, has alleged that the child perished due to administration of wrong medicine and as such it has warned that the body will not be claimed until and unless the erring doctors and staff are awarded befitting punishment.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club today, the JAC's convenor H Jiban said that late Chandam Bibi d/o Chandam Bijen and Chandam Sunibala, was admitted to JNIMS children award at around 12.47 pm due to runny nose.
He continued that the child was active when she was admitted and her parents had brought her for just treating her cold like symptoms.
Jiban then claimed that not long after the child was administered a drug which was prescribed by the doctor, her lips turned blackish.
But even when it was brought to the notice of the doctors, they brushed off the issue and told the parents that nothing would go wrong.
At around 1.30 pm, Bibi was shifted to another room, the convenor said, adding that at around 4.30 pm, a doctor came and checked on condition before instructing for an X ray to be taken.
However, on the way to take the X ray, the child perished, he added.
Jiban alleged that from 1.30 pm to 4.30 pm, when the parents and family members of the deceased pleaded to the doctors and the staff to check the condition of the child, none came.
All of the staff also disappeared as soon as the child died, he added.
The JAC submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister today in connection with the death of the child, he said adding that the child would not have lost her life if it was earlier informed to the parents or the family members that JNIMS did not have enough doctors.
Until and unless strict action is taken up against the unqualified and unethical doctors and staff of JNIMS, the dead body will not be claimed, Jiban added.
Meanwhile, North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) has condemned in the strongest term the increasing cases of deaths due to wilful negligence by the staff/doctors at Government hospitals in Manipur, especially at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) and Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS).
Occurrence of such untoward incident increases due to the negligence of the hospital staff and promotion of private health services in the State, claimed a statement of NEFIS convening committee, member, Chinglen Khumukcham.
Alleging that the State Government is busy promoting private hospitals instead of looking into the matter, Chinglen added that NEFIS will submit a memorandum to the Health Minister regarding the matter tomorrow.
