Jiribam, September 22 2013:
Mobile sale of rice at subsidised price being carried out by CAF&PD Department ended in a mess at Jiribam today.
Under State Government's plan to make available of rice to general public at lower rate, three persons including officials from ADC sold rice at Champanagar area of the Sub-Division today.
However, the officials quietly left the place after selling rice to around 30-40 persons assuming that the stock they had was not enough for the large number of people gathered since early morning.
While a team of VDF arrived at the scene and took up necessary security measures, people waited there for long with the hope that additional stock of rice would be arranged by the District Administration.
However, they had to return empty handed as the officials did not come again to resume the sale.
Earlier, a large number of people gathered at Champanagar since early morning to get their share of rice as the price of rice has skyrocketed upto Rs 28 to Rs 30 per kg at Jiribam.
Although, the shopkeepers hike price of essential commodities as they wish, the District Administration remains as a mere spectator without taking any action against them, a local said.
According to an official source, it is suspicious that some contractors are exporting rice to Assam using their political and local goons contacts at this critical juncture.
APL and BPL rice is stocked at Jiribam FCI godown after it has been brought in from Lumding by train.
From there, respective district contractors have to lift their quotas of rice.
