Imphal, January 22 2021:
The United People's Revolutionary Front of Manipur (UPRFM) has called a general strike for 18 hours from January 25 midnight to 6 pm of January 26 .
In a statement, the outfit alleged that long before India adopted her Constitution on January 26, 1950, Manipur had her own written Constitution, the Manipur State Constitution Act, 1947 and election was held in June/July 1948, it said.
The first Assembly sitting was held on October 18, 1948.This is more than proof that Manipur had her own Constitution but King Budhachandra was lured to Shillong and forcibly made to sign the Merger Agreement on September 21, 1949, alleged the outfit.
The Merger Agreement was however not ratified by the Manipur State Legislative Assembly and it was rejected by the same on October 14, 1949, alleged the outfit and added that however on October 15 of 1949, India announced that Manipur had joined the Indian Union.
As such the Republic Day celebration has nothing to do with Manipur as it existed as an independent Nation with a Constitution long before India became a republic, alleged the outfit and added that the forced and wilful merger cannot stand the test of international laws.
Urging the people not to participate in the Republic Day celebration, UPRFM said that it has nothing to do with the people of Manipur.
The general strike will however not cover emergency services, religious related activities and the media.
