Imphal, August 21 2019:
With the Barak section of Imphal-Jiribam highway growing worse and worse, the highway may snap any time.
Notably, HVS Construction Private Limited, Nidhi Creative Private Limited and BIPL had been maintaining the highway under National Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and all the expenditures were borne by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).
Apart from maintenance works, the three firms were supposed to improve the highway.
Sources informed that the entire length of Imphal-Jiribam highway is quite good except for the Barak section.
Although it has been almost two months since a landslide hit the Barak section of the highway on Jiribam side, the damaged area cannot be fully repaired yet on account of continuous movement of POL and LPG TTs.
Before the POL and LPG TTs took Imphal-Jiribam highway, a large number of goods laden trucks were travelling on the highway.
Now with the addition of a huge fleet of POL and LPG TTs, no time is available to repair the landslide affected portion, said the sources.
In the absence of any proper repairing, the particular portion worn out to the extreme level.
Given this situation, the particular section is likely to become unfit for any type of vehicular traffic.
Meanwhile, the maintenance cost of Barak and Makru bridges has soared to an unaffordable level on account of continuous movement of large fleets of goods laden truck, POL and LPG TTs.
The situation is so bad that either of the two bridges or both may be shut down any time, added the sources.
