Villagers repair Mahadev Lamkhai-Tongou road

Imphal, October 20 2016: The 33-km Mahadev Lamkhai-Tongou road in Ukhrul, which has been causing inconvenience to nearby locals and commuters due to its deplorable condition, was repaired yesterday by a large number of local residents.

Tongou village chief Atem A Shimray, while speaking to mediapersons, said that North Eastern Council had sanctioned Rs 74.12 crore for construction of road from Mahadev Lamkhai to Tolloi Pfutsero.

Execution of road construction work was started in 2004.By 2007, the work was executed till Tolloi.

However, most of the constructed portions of the said road were not blacktopped.

The villagers has thought that the construction work will finally ease their suffering.

Therefore, they were disappointed to witness the same old pitiable road condition, A Shimray stated.

He went on to say that repeated requests to the State Government to repair the road failed to yield positive result.

Tongou resident MD Shimray said that decision to repair the road by themselves was taken after a joint meeting of the neighbouring villagers and youth.

"The road had become very difficult to travel particularly during medical emergencies.

Villagers of 8 villages came together and repaired the road in such a short span of time which the State Government could not do in all these years," he said.

He added that none of the villagers had not taken any compensation for repairing the road.

If the State Government does not repair the road at the earliest, the villagers will demand land compensation for 30 metres acquired on either side of the road at the time of its construction.
