State TB policy mooted

Participants of a panel discussion of a one-day advocacy workshop at Hotel Classic strongly felt the need to formulate State TB Control policy in order to ensure effective TB control in Manipur.
The workshop was jointly organised by Manipur State TB Society, Manipur State TB NGO Forum, and Global Helath Advocate with the theme Care and Control of TB In Manipur.
Observing the ever increasing health threat posed by TB in the State, thepanellists strongly stressed on the need to formulate State TB policy in order to check the hazard posed by TB.
Speaking at the occasion, State TB officer, RK Lakhsana pointed out that the number of people with Multi-Drug Resistance TB (MDRTB) is 28.The patients have been diagnosed with MDRTB while conducting a test on 73 TB patients in Imphal West and Imphal East districts.
He said Manipur is above the national average of people with MDRTB.
Manipur TB Control Programme has been initiated since 1962 and the Revised National TB Control Programme was started in 1998.Since January 21, 2002 RNTCP, a fully central sponsored scheme, has been implemented in all the districts of the State.

There are 53 DMC test centres in the State.
The number of TB patients out of every lakh population is 104 .
Lack of manpower, infrastructures, lack of trained officers under RNTCP, and lack of medical staff participation in TB programmes etc have hampered the implementation of TB control programme in the Manipur, he said.
Laksana also added that Programatic management of Drug resistance TB Programme has been implemented in Imphal East and Imphal West districts.
The panellists of the workshop today included Health Minister T Phungzathang, MP Dr Th Meinya, MLA Dr Ibohalbi, State TB Officer, RK Laksana, MLA Dr Ng Bijoy, Health Commissioner, Moses Chalai, President of AMWJU A Mobi, representative of NGOs Dr Aheibam Jayenta and Ngouba.
Admitting that the number of TB patients has increased in Manipur, Health Minister Phungzathang Tonsing said the Government would endeavour formulation of State TB Control Policy.
Dr Th Meinya said an effective State TB Control policy is necessary in order to effectively check TB.
Various experts and activists have spoke on the occasion as resource persons.
