2000 policemen to be recruited

The State Cabinet in its meeting held today with CM O Ibobi in the chair has approved recruitment of 2000 police constables to fill in the vacant posts in State
Police Dept.
Briefing mediapersons about the Cabinet meeting, Government spokesperson and Edn Minister M Okendro pointed out that the total sanctioned posts of personnel in State Police Department is 33,000 but the current strength excluding those personnel who got retired in the past two months is only 28,000.There are about 5,000 posts which are lying vacant following retirement of police personnel.
So, the decision of the Cabinet has been taken in view of the large number of vacant posts lying in the Police Department.
Okendro further informed that the State Government has been unable to provide adequate police force for Loktak Downstream Project, Railway line constructions as well as in police stations located in the hill districts.
Police stations in the hill districts must be equipped with adequate strength of personnel.
Moreover, the Loktak downstream alone needs a battalion of Manipur Police.
Besides, there are also pending works for opening police outposts for the railway line construction workers to protect them from various threats.
However, it will take some time to fill in all the required police personnel.
For the time being, 2000 police constables would be recruited and the expenditures required would be adjusted from the 14th Finance Commission.
The spokesperson also informed that the Cabinet has approved creation of the post of Commissioner (Disability) to address the problems being faced by the persons with disabilities in the State.
In addition to this, the Cabinet also discussed the need to review and amend the existing Act.
The Cabinet also gave its approval to acquisition of the required land for construction one district hospital each in Imphal East and Imphal West.
District hospital for Imphal West would be constructed at Mayang Imphal while Sagolmang has been chosen as the site for Imphal East district hospital.
Each of the hospital will be constructed at a cost of Rs 35.13 crores under Special Central Assistance.
Okendro further informed that one GNM school would be constructed in Ukhrul, Senapati, Chandel and Tamenglong district at the cost of Rs 10 crore each under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The Central Government would provide 85 percent of the total cost while the remaining 15 percent would be provided by the State Government.
