World Wetlands Day observed

World Wetlands Day 2025 was celebrated on Friday at Singjamei Chingamakha High School under the theme, "Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future" .
The event organised by the Leima Chanu Nawa Tengbang Lup, Singjamei Mathak Chongtham Leikai in collaboration with Sangai Trust Foundation, aimed to raise awareness about the importance of wetlands, with a special focus on the wetlands of Manipur.
The celebration was graced by esteemed dignitaries, including Mini Sinam, Deputy Inspector Imphal West Zone-1; Prof S Bhagyabati, former Head, Department of Medicine, RIMS; Salam Prasanta, managing trustee, Sangai Trust Foundation and Thokchom Renu, Headmistress, Singjamei Chingamakha High School.
Speaking on the occasion, Salam Prasanta emphasized the ecological significance of wetlands, their role in biodiversity conservation, and the need for sustainable management practices.
He also expressed concern over the rapidly vanishing wetlands in Manipur and highlighted different ways to conserve them.
"Wetlands are essential to human wellbeing, inclusive economic growth and climate mitigation and adaptation", said Prof S Bhagyabati.
She also called for sustainable and regenerative agricultural practices to conserve wetlands and promote biodiversity.
Mini Sinam also delivered a lecture on the topic, "Wetland and Global Climate Change" .
