Imphal, January 16, 2011:
Despite having invested huge funds in road communications, no improvement is seen in almost all the roads, right from the national highways to inter village roads.
All metalled roads lack quality control.
A three km inter village road from Leimaram Ichum to Keirap Kom in Senapati district is one such example of the lack of quality control.
Lush green grass has grown in the middle of the road of which work was completed just 15 days back.
A team of reporters who went for coverage of a function at Ichum Kom Keirap witnessed the grass being uprooted by the villagers.
The improvement work of the road was taken up by the state PWD with funds released from the Special Plan Assistance (SPA).
The work was taken up in May and was completed in December, 2010. The villagers said they had requested the contractor and the authority concerned to control the quality of the work, but all went in vain and all they got in the end was a grass grown road.
They further said the improvement work was taken up with a sanctioned amount of Rs.65 lakh and the contract work was taken up by three persons, Ngamthang Haokip, former MLA and minister, village authority secretary Hensei and Brucelee of Kwakeithel.
The villagers said they are aware of the fact that 80% of the funds had been withdrawn before commencement of the actual work.
