ZSUM appeals Government for immediate intervention on Jal Jeevan schemes

Imphal, December 15 2024: The Zeliangrong Students' Union has appealed to the Government and concerned authority to immediately intervene and conduct a thorough inspection of the water supply projects under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in Tamenglong and Noney districts.

A statement issued by the Zeliangrong Students' Union Manipur (ZSUM) highlighted serious lapses in project implementation, accusing the responsible authorities and contractors of negligence compromising the schemes objectives.

The Jal Jeevan Mission, launched in 2019, aims to provide safe and reliable tap water to all rural households by 2024.reducing the rural-urban divide.

However, a recent survey conducted by ZSUM in response to numerous grievances and complaints from various villages across Tamenglong and Noney districts regarding the substandard execution of Water supply under New Development Bank (NDB) awarded to Vishnu Prakash R Punglia Ltd Company was found with many incomplete projects, poor-quality construction, and deviation from the approved (DPR) plan and leaving many projects non functional.

The ZSUM continued that despite funds being disbursed, the improper construction of water supply systems directly impacts villagers' access to clean and reliable water.

Substandard infrastructure can lead to leaks, contamination, and insufficient delivery of water.

ZSUM warned that if authorities fail to respond promptly, it would take "stringent action" in coordination with the people of Tamenglong and Noney districts to address the issue and also urged transparency and accountability to restore public trust and ensure the successful implementation of the water supply scheme.

The ZSUM further stated that some individuals and agencies in Tamenglong and Noney districts have been manipulating the ignorant public for the past many years and urged them to stop the culture of misusing public funds.

The Zeliangrong Students' Union reiterated its commitment to ensure proper utilization of public resources and called for collective responsibility to serve and commit for the welfare of the people.
