World Consumer Rights Day observed

World Consumer Rights Day was observed today with the primary objective of raising awareness on the importance of consumer rights at Heisnam Lairembi Community Hall in Thanga Assembly Constituency.
The observation was held on the theme 'Fair and Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Consumers' organised by the Consumers' Club Manipur in collaboration with Heisnam Athletic and Cultural Club, Thanga.
President Consumers' Club Manipur T Phulchand Sharma; former president Consumers' Dispute Redressal Forum Imphal Dr Ch Narendra and elderly persons Heisnam Ibocha Singh, Heisnam Beikul Singh.
Salam Thoiba Singh and Heisnam Maipak Singh as the presidium members.
Speaking at the occasion, T Phulchand Sharma briefed about the history of World Consumer Rights Day and its origin which can be traced back to when former USA president John F Kennedy highlighted the consumer rights issues in a momentous speech to the US Congress on March 15, 1962 .
After his historic speech, the need to address consumer rights issues gained significance across the globe.
In Indian context, the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 was enacted for speedy redressal of consumer grievances which was later replaced by Consumer Protection Act, 2019 prioritising on protecting the rights and interests of the consumers thereby providing additional benefits, he added.
Phulchand underscored the need of sensitizing the masses about consumer rights and to strictly adhere to rules and regulations laid by the competent authorities to ensure that the consumers are not exploited.
