Thoubal, July 14 2024:
Urging the present dispensation to refrain from gambling with students' academic careers, Khangabok Assembly Constituency MLA Surjakumar Okram has called for efforts to facilitate smooth functioning of Dhanamanjuri University (DMU), which is currently embroiled in a row.
The MLA made the statement as the chief guest during the 16th District Library Cum Youth Centre (DLCYC), Award Distribution Ceremony 2024 held today at Thoubal Athokpam.
As a part of the event, a brand new reading room at the youth centre was also inaugurated.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Surjakumar questioned how an administration that cannot even run a University, be capable of resolving the Manipur crisis.
Lambasting the BJP-led Government, he informed that he had brought up the issues plaguing DMU a total of three times in the State Assembly but the State Government has failed to act on them so far.
He further added that he had hoped for better academic opportunities for students with the upgradation of DM College to DM University.
However, in view of the present circumstances, he observed that the situation was better for students when it was just a college.
Additionally, he questioned how students staying in relief camps and others are expected to continue pursuing their education at DMU under such unfavourable circumstances.
Pointing out that enrollment at the University had dropped by 50% this year, MLA Surjakumar urged the relevant authorities to tackle the issues at DMU and transform it into a fully functional University in the interest of the students.
Meanwhile, during the ceremony, Leimapokpam Muhindro Award, Changamayum Harimohon Memorial Award, Takhellambam Nageshwor and Nungshi Devi Award, Athokpam Bira and Tombimacha Devi Memorial Award, Leimapokpam Khomdomcha Memorial Award, Mayengbam Kaminibabu Memorial Award and Thongam Babudhon Memorial Award were distributed to the respective recipients.
Shawls, citations, mementos and cash awards were handed over to 32 Class X students (BOSEM), Class XII students (COHSEM), Class X students (CBSE), 3 senior citizens, one female PhD award holder, one female student of Manipur University of Culture and sportspersons.
