Shillong, July 13 2014:
In another incident in the plain belt region of West Garo Hills in Meghalaya, a woman was raped while trying to escape dacoits who had come to her house to loot it.
The dacoits, numbering about 14-15 entered the house of a resident of one Pipulbari late into the night on Saturday and when his wife tried to run from them, she was apparently caught and later raped.
She was later rescued by the Garobadha police after villagers found her lying uncon- scious by the roadside.
The village in which the incident happened is about 50 kms from the town of Tura.
According to the victim, who was later taken to the Hatsingimari hospital for a medical test, 14-15 armed dacoits barged into their house at about 2 am Sunday morning, while she was fast asleep alone in the house as her husband was away.
The dacoits looted gold ornaments, 2 mobile phones that were with her and made off with more than a lakh in cash from her house.
One of the dacoits also held a gun at her and threatened to kill her.
"They kept a gun pointed at my head, but I think the guns were fake as they even tried to pull the trigger with no results," said the brave woman.
"I tried to run away while they were busy but they chased after me and caught me.
They then put me in a vehicle and drove me.
One of them, Kabir Ali, then took me aside and raped me," said the victim.
The victim further said that the same person then beat her up with the intention to kill her, but was unable to do so.
They then threw her from the vehicle and left her for dead near the NEC road in a place called Tangaon.
Incidentally, Ali is from the same village as the woman and another dacoit has been identified by the victim as Zahirul.
The victim further said that her husband had been threatened by possibly the same group and had been away from home over the last three days.
Apparently, Ali had been spotted after a long absence from the area.
Villagers called the Garobadha police, the Police Station under which Tangaon falls who rushed to the spot andimmediately rescued the woman.
The woman aged around 30 is now recuperating in the Hatsingimari.
Police sources have confirmed the incident and said that they had taken the woman to Hatsingimari, where she confirmed that she had been raped.
The Mankachar Police Station has been alerted on the case and the matter is being taken.
