Rs 1 Cr sanctioned for pig compensation

The Government of India has sanctioned Rs one crore for payment of compensation for pigs killed by African Swine Fever in Manipur in 2023 .
This was stated by Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services Secretary Michael Achom at a one day awareness programme on Classical Swine Fever held at Veterinary complex, Sanjenthong today.
He said that Rs one crore has been sanctioned for payment of compensation to the farmers whose pigs were died of African Swine Fever in Manipur in 2023 .
Michael Achom said that the compensation amount would be distributed to farmers shortly.
Piggery is a profitable occupation in Manipur but it sometimes prove to be a serious menace to farmers when epidemics like African Swine Fever break out.
Highlighting the need for following clean and scientific methods of rearing pigs, the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services Secretary said that there is no beneficiary oriented scheme of the Centre or the State with regard to animal farming.
Nonetheless, 50 per cent subsidy is given on capital component and farmers may avail this benefit, he said.
Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services Director RK Khogendrajit said that piggery is a profitable occupation.
Pork is a key source of animal protein, fat and vitamins.
There is now a vaccine for Classical Swine Fever and it is not very dangerous even if pigs are infected by it, Khogendrajit said.
But there is no vaccine for African Swine Fever and it often proves fatal once pigs are infected by it.
Under entrepreneur development programme, 50 per cent subsidy is given for construction of compartments and purchase of equipment, he said.
Experts spoke on African Swine Fever, Classical Swine Fever, clinical signs, prevention and control during the awareness programme which was attended by representatives of piggery federations and farmers.
