World Zoonoses Day 2024 observed

The District Health Society Thoubal and District Surveillance Unit, Thoubal jointly organised the observance ceremony of World Zoonosis Day 2024 at NHM Conference Hall, CMO Office Thoubal today.
The ceremony was held under the theme "One World, One Health: Prevent Zoonosis" and witnessed the attendance of Dr S Gopal Singh, State Surveillance Officer, IDSP, NHM Manipur as the chief guest; Dr Y Nokul Singh, Chief Medical Officer Thoubal as the functional president and Dr P Gojendro Singh, Joint Director Veterinary Thoubal; Dr M Nomita Devi, District Leprosy Officer Thoubal and Dr L Lalitkumar Singh, District Surveillance Officer Thoubal as the guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr S Gopal said that out of 200 human infectious diseases, 60 are zoonotic diseases.
Among diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans, Covid-19 was one that caused massive fear among the people, he added.
The dreaded monkey pox is also a zoonotic disease.
2173 cases of Dengue have been reported in 2024.Ten persons have been reported to have died after being bitten by dogs this year.
Out of this, one was from Thoubal, he said highlighting the dangers of zoonotic diseases.
In this connection he emphasized the importance of vaccinating domestic animals like cats, dogs, cows etc and keeping them in neat surroundings.
Additionally, he said that people should adopt the habit of handwashing frequently.
Meanwhile, Dr Y Nokul addressed the Senior MOs in-charge gathered at the function and highlighted the importance of educating the medical staff at their health facilities about the programmes executed at their centres.
He also urged them to remain alert when handling cases of Dengue, rabies etc and advised them to conduct frequent monitoring and surveillance.
Dr P Gojendro informed the gathering that 7671 dogs have been vaccinated between January and October 2024 and many awareness programmes have also been conducted in Thoubal.
