Imphal, August 10, 2014:
Locals of Lamshang Thong Maning in Imphal West district have formed a Joint Action Committee (JAC) in the aftermath of suspicious death of a 17-year-old housewife and demanded punishment to her husband.
Laikangbam Ningol Akoijam Ongbi Monika died at RIMS Hospital in the wee hours of August 8 after she was rushed to the hospital with complaints of breathlessness.
JAC Spokesperson Sairem Rajmani told reporters at Manipur Press Club that Monika's husband Akoijam Jiban (37) of Iroisemba Amukhong Leirak is a divorcee, who has children.
He alleged that Jiban raped Monika some time back.
However, the matter was settled with Jiban's family paying Rs 80,000 to Monika's family as customary compensation.
Around three months back, Rajmani said, Monika however eloped with Jiban.
As Monika's family was unhappy with the sudden turn of event, they refused to arrange marriage ceremony for Monika, Rajmani added.
After Monika stayed with Jiban for around three months, she was three months pregnant.
Monika's sister-in-law Ichal, a resident of Iroisemba, said that Monika came to her place and told her about frequent assaults meted out to her by Jiban.
Ichal added that Monika told her that Jiban beat her up as her family had taken Rs 80,000 from him.
Ichal said that Monika also told her that she would not be able to live with Jiban anymore.
She also requested her to give Rs 20,000, Ichal said.
Two days before her death, Monika came to her place, Ichal said and added that Jiban however came along with his mother and sister and took Monika away.
Ichal said, Monika told her that Jiban often kicked her in the chest and beat up pressing her head on the ground.
Monika's brother Laikangbam Naoba while lamenting that Jiban had not only raped his sister but also murdered her, urged the concerned to punish Jiban for his misdeed.
JAC spokesperson Sairem Rajmani said that it was suspicious that Monika might succumbed to assault blows.
Maintaining that Monika's body would not be claimed until stern action is taken against Jiban, Sairem Rajmani said that memoranda had been submitted to Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister.
