Imphal, July 07 2018:
In an intriguing turn of event, a truck driver who bought 10 litres of diesel in a canister from a Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) retail outlet located near Jiribam Chandrapur, found out that the amount of fuel he received was even less than 9 litres.
According to a source, the truck driver who was travelling from Jiribam to Imphal with a truck load of goods and commodities yesterday, had stopped at the said retail outlet to buy additional 10 litres of diesel as contingency plan.
While dispensing the diesel into his canister (which held 10 litres), he allegedly saw that the fuel dispensing unit of the retail outlet had dispensed only about 9 litres of fuel.
When the truck driver confronted the pump-man regarding the error, he was ignored and brushed aside.
The source explained that the retail outlet at Jiribam Chandrapur might have been established around two years ago and added that if the retail outlet had been established around two years ago and if the outlet had been supplying lower than the amount of fuel paid for by the customers, it raises suspicion whether the outlet has been duping the people all these years.
It also raises question on who is supervising or monitoring the BPCL retail outlets in the State, the source conveyed.
It may be mentioned that there has been a case where Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker wrote to the Ministry of Petroleum in connection with adulteration of petroleum products in the State and as a follow up, the State Government constituted a special task force to look into the matter.
The special task force consisting of police, CAF &PD, Indian Oil Corporation and Weights and Measure, conducted surprise visits at various retail outlets in Imphal East and Imphal West district to test the fuel for quality, adulterants and dispensing unit checkup.
The source mentioned that the work taken up by the special task force is laudable but expressed concern if the drive will just be conducted in Imphal East and West district and then abandoned.
It claimed that even if there are plans for a task force to undertake such drives in the hill areas and other districts, it has not been transformed into action till date.
Just like the steps taken up to prevent unethical practices at IOCL retail outlets, the time is ripe for such similar measures to be taken up over the retail outlets of BPCL, the source added.
