Three extortionists re-arrested, two accomplices jailed

In connection with the abduction case of a doctor for ransom demand of Rs 5 crore, the court of Special Judge (NIA), Imphal West on Wednesday remanded five accused including a cadre of the armed Kangleipak Communist Party (Lalumba) to judicial custody, following the lapse of police remand period.
However, three of the accused including the KCP cadre were formally re-arrested by police with regard to another case.
On Wednesday, a team of Singjamei police station produced the five accused before the court after expiry of a police remand period, which was granted on November 27 .
The team produced Wahengbam Ramananda alias Rousou alias Luwangngamba (50) of Kon-tha Ahallup Makha Leikai, his wife Usharani(43), Paonam Samungou alias Pintu (40) of Keishamthong Hodam Leirak Lairembi Maning, Leichom-bam Bipin (33) of Leimaram Shanti Bazar Mamang Leikai and Naoroibam Joyshankar (39) of Lairikyengbam Makha Leikai, with a prayer for judicial remand.
The IO of the case apprised the court that on November 23 around 12.20pm, one Khundrakpam Ibetombi w/o Dr Kh Nabakeshor filed a report to Singjamei PS, that her husband, has been abducted by two persons from their Langthabal Kunja Awang Leikai residence on November 22.The abductors then threatened to kill Dr Nabakeshor if a ransom of Rs 5 crore was not paid.
Based on the report, the police station registered a case and during the course of the investigation received input about some people, suspected to be the abductors present in Khumbong area.
In follow up action a combined team of Imphal West district police commando, Singjamei PS and Bishupur district police commando along with women personnel arrested Leichombam Bipin with a .32 pistol with five rounds on November 24 around 5.15pm.On questioning, Bipin revealed that the abduction was carried out as directed by Ramananda.
On Bipin's disclose that Ramananda would be coming to Leimaram Shanti Bazar Mamang Leikai, the combined team acted swiftly, managing to arrest Ramananda with his wife Usharani around 4.45pm.The team then searched the residence of Ramananda and arrested Joyshankar with a pistol and five rounds.
After interrogating Ramananda, the team safely rescued Dr Kh Nabakeshore from the farm house of another abductor, Pintu, at Lamdeng.
All four accused were produced the court, which had remanded them to police custody till Wednesday.
Pintu, too, was arrested from Iroisemba area with a pistol and magazine containing three rounds, one .32 pistol, one revolver, two carbine magazines, live rounds, four detonators, one .22 rifle and eight soap cases containing heroin.
The IO further informed the court that as Ramananda and the other accused persons are career criminals, their release, if any, on bail might result in tampering with the evidences and witness.
Thus, the IO prayed to remand the five to judicial custody, which the court accepted.
Meanwhile, Porompat police station apprised the court to arrest Ramananda, Paonam Samungou and Naoroibam Joyshankar, in connection with a case.
The IO informed the court that on November 15, one Arambam Dinamani of Soibam Leikai filed a report at Porompat PS, stating that on November 14 around 8.30 pm, three unidentified persons barged into his home and took away Rs 15,000 in case, two key pair of SUV-300, and gold jewellery worth Rs 25,000.Based on the report, the PS registered a case and launched investigation during which Imphal PS relayed that on November 30 three persons namely Pintu, Joyshankar and Ramananda had been arrested.
As a case has been pending at Porompat PS, the IO urged for formal arrest of the three, which the court upheld.
