State Environment Conclave held at IIIT Manipur

A State Environment Conclave was held today at the conference hall of Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Manipur in Mantripukhri under the theme, "Protect our Planet, Secure our Future" .
The conclave was organised by Students for Development (SFD), Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Manipur State Unit in collaboration with Loktak Development Authority (LDA) and IIIT Manipur.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from approximately 270 students from various districts, ranging from class 9 to university level.
The inaugural session was graced by several distinguished guests including the Asnikumar Moirangthem, Chairman, LDA; RK Amarjit Singh, CF/Central Circle with additional charge as Special Secretary (Forest, Environment & Climate Change); Prof Baskar, Director, IIIT Mantripukhri: Rahul Gaur, All India SFD in-charge; L Kamai, State in-charge and Swamidas Maimom, State convenor.
In his address, M Asnikumar Singh highlighted the urgency of addressing climate change, stating, "Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges facing humanity today, with far-reaching impacts on ecosystems, economies, and communities.
It demands a collective and comprehensive response from all of us.
As it threatens our natural resources, livelihoods, and the well-being of future generations, the importance of sustainable development becomes increasingly clear.
Sustainable development offers a balanced approach, fostering economic progress while safeguarding the environment" .
He also emphasized on holistic sustainability, critical role of students, community engagement, and adoption of daily sustainable practices.
In regard to Manipur's unique ecological challenges, Asnikumar added, "In Manipur, a State renowned for its rich biodiversity and unique ecosystems, the stakes are particularly high.
Home to many rare species of flora and fauna, our State's natural heritage faces significant risks from climate change.
Conservation is not just necessary, but critical.
Sustainable development in Manipur requires careful planning and action to protect these fragile ecosystems while promoting economic growth.
Engaging local communities is key, as their knowledge and participation are essential for ensuring long-term conservation efforts".
Further, Asnikumar asserted that by promoting environmental advocacy and engaging the youth, this conclave will have a lasting impact, empowering young leaders to take on the challenges of climate change and champion sustainable development.
The second session featured Surjit Kshetrimayum, secretary, Alliance for Development Alternative Manipur, Kakching and coordinator, Management Committee, Agan Ching Eco Park, Kakching; and Dr Indira Aribam, State co-convenor, SFD.
This session involved indepth discussions on climate change and the environmental challenges specific to Manipur.
Experts shared insights on local issues in the context of the global climate crisis and introduced the concept of Climate Smart Campus-an initiative that students can take up in their institutions.
The third session included N Ganesh, DFO, Central Forest Division; Dr Nanaocha Sharma, Scientist, IBDS, Imphal; Dr David Singh, Associate Professor, NIT Manipur; SFD State co-convenor, S Bidyalakshmee Bai and Dr Indira Aribam.
The final session furthered the discussions with a focus on practical environmental solutions, research, and policy recommendations that could be implemented at the local level.
Additionally, an exhibition was also conducted, where students showcased their projects and innovative ideas related to environmental conservation.
The exhibition reflected the students' creativity and commitment to making a difference.
