Kanglatongbi school gets lesser amount

Imphal, June 05 2013:
Even though it is not clear whether the money sanctioned for procuring school uniforms under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) is commensurate to the lists of students submitted by other schools, the money sanctioned for Kanglatongbi Hindi Secondary School for purchasing school uniforms for its students is far short of the actual number of students.
Talking with The Sangai Express, some teachers of the school alleged that money sanctioned under SSA for purchasing school uniforms was far short of the actual amount needed.
In addition, teachers of the school have not getting their salaries for several months.
Kanglatongbi Hindi Secondary School was adopted by the Government in 1960 and it is now one of the Government schools in Imphal West district which has the highest number of students.
Since 2009, the school recorded pass percentage of 90 to 95 in the HSLC exam conducted by BSEM, claimed the teachers.
It is also the first school in Imphal West district which has more than one section in same class between Class I and Class VII due to the high rate of enrolment.
In this year's HSLC Exam, 26 students of the school scored letter marks in Maths, Science and Hindi which reflected dedication of teachers teaching in the school.
In view of the school's excellent academic performance and the Government's provision for school uniforms at free of cost, many parents now wish to enrol their children in the school.
Altogether 820 students have been admitted in the school during the current academic session, said the teachers.
However, there is a gap between the teachers' efforts and Government policies.
For the 820 students enrolled in the school, the amount needed for purchasing school uniforms under SSA is 2,06,712 but only Rs 1,94,184 was sanctioned.
Even if the full amount of Rs 2,06,712 is released, it is not enough for purchasing uniforms for all the students.
Again, even if the teachers wish to make up the shortage, they have not getting a single rupee as salary for this year.
After the shortage amount was contributed by the local Pradhan, school uniforms were distributed to students yesterday.
Teachers of the school have not been getting their salaries for the past many months on account of certain lapses on the part of United Bank of India.
Both UBI and the Director, Education (S) have been approached to ensure payment of pending salaries but to no avail so far, conveyed the teachers.
In the absence of adequate number of desk and bench, groups of 5/6 students are made to sit together on one pair of desk and bench.
Repeated appeals to construct a cycle shed ran into deaf ears.
Even as the Government constructed a toilet complex, all the toilets are now unusable due absence of water supply facility, they added.
