Imphal, December 04 2024:
From inadequate classrooms to not having a permanent campus, shortage of infrastructure plagued the Manipur University of Culture (MUC) which the State Government repeatedly says will be upgraded to a Central varsity.
The first academic session of MUC which was inaugurated on August 12 began on September 20, 2016 to promote the art and culture of Manipur.
MUC has been using the campus of the Directorate of Art and Culture at Palace Compound as its academic block though the classes are being conducted at Imphal Art College, Government Dance College and Government Music College.
Rajya Sabha MP Leisemba Sanajaoba had recently stated that the Government has acquired a land measuring 118 acres at Wakha in Imphal East to set up a permanent campus of Manipur University of Culture (MUC) .
MUC has eleven departments - Dance, Music, Sankirtana, Thang-Ta, Theatre, Umang Lai Haraoba, Tribal Studies, Cultural Studies, Visual Arts, Manipuri and English departments.
Classes of these departments (except Visual Arts) were conducted at Government Dance College and Government Music College about three years back but the same have been shifted to a private establishment (extension campus) at Canchipur due to some issue.
MUC's Visual Art Department still holds its class at Imphal College.
Though the Government has said that land has been acquired at Wakha to set up a permanent campus for MUC, there is no sign of the construction work being initiated as of yet.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, one student stated that the number of students who are enrolled at MUC is high as the varsity provides both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
Saying that the undergraduate programme has upto six semesters while the post graduate has four, he added that MUC doesn't have sufficient classrooms to hold classes for the 11 departments.
The Government has been seemingly ignoring their plight, the students said while expressing desire for the MUC to have a permanent campus and adequate classrooms.
He also appealed to the Govt to build a hostel for the university as many students are far from distant places.
