40,000 plus living with HIV in State

From amongst the 6,69,044 blood samples tested in the State so far, the number of people who have been infected with HIV and AIDS has reached 42,361 till the end of 2012 .
According to data received from Manipur State AIDS Control Society (MACS), the number of people living with HIV and AIDS (PLHIVs) has reached 42,361 till December 2012 .
Out of this, 11,878 are females while 2780 are children.
According to the sentinel surveillance report of 2008, the prevalence rate of HIV among injecting drug users (IDUs) is 28.65 percent, among the female sex workers (FSWs) it is 10.87 percent and the rate recorded among pregnant women is 0.5 percent.
But in 2010, the HIV prevalence rate among these various risk groups showed a slight decrease as compared to previous years with 12.8 percent prevalence rate recorded among IDUs and 2.80 percent among FSWs.
However, the prevalence rate of HIV and AIDS among pregnant women showed a slight increase at 0.78 percent.
The HIV sero-positivity for the risk category as per surveillance report from 1990-2000 shows a gradual decline in the rate from 30.05 percent in 1990 and attained its lowest level at 6.04 percent in 1993 .
From here, it again increased rapidly reaching the peak in 1997 at 35.76 percent.
From 1997, it again started to decline but at a slower rate than during 1990-93 .
