Dimapur, October 01 2019:
The Joint Committee on Prevention of Illegal Immigration (JCPI), while responding to the call of North East Forum for Indigenous Peoples (NEFIP)'s at the 1st Central Executive Council meeting held at Kohima to launch a protest against the "contentious" Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) 2016, has said that it will organise a march on October 3 in Kohima.
The purposed march will begin from 9.30 am starting from the Badminton Stadium, Raj Bhavan Road to the official residence of the Chief Minister of Nagaland, the JCPI said in a statement.
"As JCPI is to voice the collective concern of the indigenous people of the region, all participants and citizens of Kohima are requested to support the cause by participating in this important march," it appealed.
Meanwhile, in an emergency meeting held Tuesday to discuss the issue arising out of the recommendations submitted to the Banuo Commission, the JCPI said that "the Nagaland Gaon Bura Federation (NGBF) has been one of the founding members of JCPI and that the issue raised by the Dimapur GB Sadar/Urban has been reviewed".
According to the JCPI, the assertion to 'debar' the Dimapur GB Sadar/Urban in the Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN) exercise as 'non-negotiable' is dropped provided only genuine Naga Gaon Buras (GBs) from Nagaland should be empanelled by the district administration.
"This is solely done with the intention that the RIIN exercise is carried out without any loopholes so that no wrong antecedent is made," it added.
According to the JCPI, in its case study report submitted to the Commission on Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN) inadvertently mentioned the whole of Dimapur GB Sadar/Urban areas.
The JCPI said it "sincerely" regretted the "oversight" into the nuances of the report.
The JCPI then appealed to all GBs to extend cooperation in the crucial process of identification of Nagaland indigenous inhabitants so that any anomalies are removed to serve the common interest as GBs are the traditional guardians its citizens.
